Choosing The Right Bit For Your Application
Using a different style of bit can increase the bit life on your Asphalt Zipper® machine which will reduce maintenance and down time. Your Asphalt Zipper® owner's manual has a section explaining bit wear patterns. Here are some considerations when trying to determine what bits to use for your specific application.
The heavy duty carbide bit is the standard bit that is provided on most Asphalt Zipper® machines. It is suited for most applications, is economical and will provide many hours of operation before it wears down and must be replaced.
The double carbide bit is fitted with a second carbide ring that protects the steel body of the bit from erosion when the bits are exposed to extremely abrasive material in the road base. If your heavy duty bits consistently show an hour-glass wear pattern on the body, but the carbide tips are not wearing away, consider replacing your bits with the double carbide model. Customers who previously were experiencing hour-glass wear, who replaced their bits with double carbide bits, report three to four times the bit life. The tip of the double carbide bit is the same as the standard bit, so if you are experiencing tip wear or fracture, using the double carbide bit will not extend bit life.
The enhanced carbide tip bit is suited for cutting extremely hard or thick asphalt, or for use in applications where you may inadvertently strike rock in the road base. The carbide tip extends deeper into the body of the bit so the carbide will not break off as easily, or if it does chip it will re-sharpen itself. Use this bit if you consistently chip the carbide off your bits or if you find your bits wear down quickly.

Bits and Blocks
Bits and sometimes blocks eventually wear out depending on the conditions. Keeping both in good shape speeds up the grinding process and creates less wear on your Asphalt Zipper® machine.
